If you have a research proposal that you believe would be of interest to the BBKA and wish to apply for funds, please complete an application form.

What is and isn’t supported?
Whilst the BBKA will consider all applications, there are some exclusions which preclude funding.  These are:

  1. Development of a commercial product.  Typically, this would be development of a product to a high degree of technical readiness.  Support could be considered in the early stages of technological development, provided it aligns with our charitable objective.

  2. New equipment for beekeeping, new feed or treatment products.

  3. Researchers located outside of the UK.  Being a UK organisation, comprising an association of UK beekeeping associations, we do not financially support international research.

  4. Projects that do not support the BBKA’s objective.

How does the process work?
All applications are assessed by an independent panel of experts, who are recognized in the field of apiculture.  This panel makes a recommendation to the RTE Committee, that sits in January, May and September.  If supported, the application is then presented to the Board of Trustees to approve funding.  All applicants, regardless of outcome, will be notified by the RTE Chair.

Future areas of interest:
Though not specific to any research area, the RTE Committee welcomes applications whose outputs are directly, and practically, relevant to BBKA members.  Of note, applications which directly address and provide mitigation to current and emerging threats are of particular interest, eg Yellow-legged Asian Hornet, Tropilaelaps and Small Hive Beetle.

We are also approached by researchers for ‘Letters of Support’ as they attempt to obtain funds for their research ideas.  We do not send these letters lightly, but where we can, we do try to enable research that meets and supports BBKA objectives.  Please use the application form above to submit details.
